How to Buy a Router

July 22nd, 2010 by evanes

Routers prove to be the best way to connect more than one computer together minus the hassle of too much cabling and LAN connections. Should you decide to purchase one for your home, it is a must to purchase only the best one.

If you feel virtually alienated when it comes to the idea of purchasing a router and you feel incapable of choosing the right one, let me tell you more on some buying tips:

Tip 1: Transmission Speed

Compare speed. The transmission speed is what you should look first to judge the efficiency of the router. Those wireless router models produced some years ago have a range of 802.11g with 54 Mbps of speed. Today, you can find some brands saying that their routers have the speed of almost 300 Mbps.

Those brands that have faster speed are usually faster. However, have it known that most of them do not really deliver that speed. You will find some only transmitting a speed much lower than what is advertised. You might just end up paying extra for a device that functions much like the cheaper ones.

Tip 2: Use Reviews As Your Guide But Do Not Be Totally Influenced By Them

Sure reading reviews helps a lot in knowing more about the experiences of other people but you are more likely to encounter a cornucopia of positive and negative reviews which will only confuse you. Look at the general rating if it is satisfactory. This is especially true for wireless networks. Wireless devices tend to have a few interference problems especially if you have other wireless devices at home with the same frequency. Also, there are people who do not know how to install a secure router at home. This might affect their opinions about the product.

Tip 3: Choose One That Is Compatible With Your Network Adapter

For instance you are using WiFi adapter for your internet connection. You have to choose one brand that is compatible with this. Ask your internet provider for some good brands that are compatible. The latest ones are usually compatible with almost anything but if you are not really sure, consult your internet provider first.

Tip 4: Know More About The Warranty Policy

Warranty claims last for 6 months to a year depending on the product. Before you purchase, consider the length of warranty time first. This should keep you posted on how long the manufacturing company can back your purchase up.

How to Use a Network Router

July 20th, 2010 by evanes

A network router is a device that connects you to the Internet and lets you connect to your other computers as well. Communication with other computers at home is ideal for those with multiple computers for those with bigger families. You no longer have to share the same computer with your kids.

There are two types-the wireless and the wired. But you can use a wired connection to a wireless on as long as you have LAN cable ready. The usual routers have at least four ports at the back. Wireless devices can connect to this.

Here is a brief guide on how you can use your network router:

Step 1: Put the router close to a place where you can configure it easily. If you have a desktop computer, it is better to place it close to that computer and use it as your main base station. At the back of the router, you can find Ethernet ports. You can also find one port markedly separated from the others and this is called the WAN port. Assuming that you already have an internet provider, remove the Ethernet cable from the modem of your computer and connect it at the back of the router.

Step 2: Plug the router to a power source. You can see all the buttons blinking first until 3 or 4 lights are the only ones blinking. The desktop computer you have connected it to needs to be configured first but if you have a laptop of the latest model, this will already automatically pick up wireless signals. Most of the laptops today are wireless ready.

Step 3: Configure the settings of the router. There is a small disc included in the package. Put it in the CD-rom of your desktop PC and run it. A start-up wizard will appear and will walk you through the installation process. It will ask for WAP information and you need to key in those needed information. You can find the details in the manual. Configure the administrator password and the SSID network name so hackers cannot invade. Most routers today are already hacker-proof but this is one additional measure you can take to prevent other people from entering your system.

Step 4: Some brands of routers may need you to log in to their website for some more configurations. Just follow what is stated there in the manual. But otherwise, you are already ready to use your connection.

High Speed Internet – A Must For Speedy Browsing!

July 18th, 2010 by evanes

Internet is full of opportunities, to, enjoy, to connect to millions and a great chance to earn some money. However, to enjoy all so many benefits of the internet you need a high speed internet connection facility to go with it.

Earlier networks were mainly the dial-up networks which make you dial a certain number and then you were connected to the information highway. Thought this was one of the most easiest and convenient methods of going online, it has now become outdated and can be actually called as slow.

Latest high speed internet is the broadband connection, which allows data transfer in ‘MBPS/GBPS’ which means there are some million or billion bits being transferred per second from your computer to the internet. This makes it the most fastest and efficient internet connection.

There are many benefits of high speed internet connection. These are:

Easy and fast uploads and downloads. You can upload an entire 10 minute video within no time at all. In the same way you can attach large files, download large files, etc. without having to spend hours at your computer. This job is done within minutes through broadband.
Better picture quality, better voice quality and faster streaming. So if you enjoy watching like sports action, movies, videos, you will not have to wait each time for the video and the picture to load, you can watch the ongoing action continuously.
Better video and audio helps those stay connected to their loved ones better, especially when they use VOIP or messenger services.
For professionals who have made internet as a media to run their business or use skills, it is important that they stay online most of the time so they can be constantly in touch with their clients. Almost all professionals use messengers of VOIP services to stay connected and update them with the progress from time to time.
Those working from home and dealing in share markets, foreign exchange, webmasters, etc. to need using broadband services for faster information updates and better transfer ability.

High speed internet generally works out to be cheaper than the dial-up. This is because data transfer is higher and your billing is done according to the amount of data transferred rather than the time. If your computer is equally powerful you will find that the work which took you an hour before will not take only 20 minutes or lesser. You can open multiple browsers and each one will work efficiently. This will facilitate you to multi-task and save time.

You will find many internet service providers who provide you with broadband connections at competitive prices. You can compare different ones and select the one which is most useful to you. You should know that there could be change in the hardware for using this facility, you may require a router and not the modem anymore. You will be provided information about this change by the internet service provider.

There is another technology which will help your dial-up connection works as fast as the broadband, at 50% lesser cost than broadband. You can find more information about such a facility and check out whether it actually provides high speed internet facility to you.

Five Steps in Installing the Router

July 18th, 2010 by evanes

The device that can connect two or more computers under one network is called a router. The router has many facets and it can facilitate many functions all at once. The routers are commonly used to connect one computer to another in a smaller set up like in a small office or in a home. The typical router makes use of the NAT or the network address translation which can tell the right way where the packet of data should go. The most essential function of the router in a network is that it acts as the network’s main gateway to the Internet. There is a right way how to install a router so that the network could consistently work efficiently. Wear gloves while you install the router so you will not get to feel the static electricity inherent in installing routers

1. The first step on how to install a router is ensuring that the computers you plan to connect together have the Ethernet card or the local area network card. This card allows the computers to share files together. Most of the laptops and computers made over the past few years already have LAN cards installed in them. If your computer doesn’t have the card you can always buy one and install it yourself or ask a computer technician to install it for you.

2. The second step on how to install a router is connecting the cable of the ISP or the Internet Service Provider to the router’s port for the Internet. If your connection is DSL then the cable for the input is the line of the telephone. The cable should be attached to the router’s port for the DSL. Another way to connect the router is to have a thick cable called the CAT6.

3. The third step on how to install a router is taking the Ethernet cables and plugging them to the router’s ports for the Ethernet. It is important for you to remember that two ports are needed so two computers or laptops can use just one Internet connection. If your router has a single port for the Ethernet then you will need to purchase a hub where the router will be connected. The hub will also have ports where the computers shall also be linked.

4. The fourth step on how to install a router is switching it on so it can start working.

5. The fifth step on how to install a router is reading the manual of the router thoroughly. The router should be configured at this point which you will learn from reading its manual. The configuration procedure depends on the router’s brand. You should configure it so the computers or laptops can have Internet connection.

Speed Up Your Wireless Internet Connection

July 17th, 2010 by evanes

Do you have a wireless internet connection at home, or at the office? Isn’t it great? With a wireless connection you can move your laptop from room to room and still access the web and your email. But keep in mind that by its very nature, a wireless connection is slower than a wired connection. Having said that, if you’re concerned that your wireless internet speed isn’t what it should be, there are things you can try to speed it up

Move the wireless router

Your wireless router is the hub for your wireless internet experience. Your wireless signal broadcasts from it, and if it’s tucked away in a far corner, you’re connection quality can suffer. Keep in mind, too, that structural elements like wiring and plumbing can interfere with a wireless signal. A building’s structure, too, can be sufficient to affect wireless performance. Remember you can always check your wireless signal strength by hovering your mouse over the wireless internet indicator found in the system tray, near the time of day in the corner of your screen. Generally speaking, the stronger the signal, the better your internet connection. So physically moving the router to a more central location – one away from structural elements – may well help.

Update the wireless driver on your computer

If your driver for your wireless router is out of date, your performance may be enhanced by getting the latest version. There’s a reason vendors release new drivers. Often it’s to address performance or security issues. Either way, it’s a good idea to keep it up to date. Fortunately, Windows can automatically get the latest driver – with just a bit of help from you. Click on your Windows Start button, and then right-click on My Computer (or just Computer for your Vista and Win 7 users). In the pop-up menu, select Manage. In the resulting Computer Management screen, click on the plus sign next to Network adapters. Find the entry for your wireless adapter (hint: it will probably contain the word wireless or WLAN) and right-click on it. In the pop-up, select Update Driver Software. Windows will search the internet for the latest version. In case Windows isn’t able to query for the driver, you can always go to the manufacturer’s web site and download a setup program for the driver manually.

Upgrade the router’s firmware

Just like it’s important to keep current on the adapter’s driver version, the router’s software may well have updated since you installed it. And again, this update may well improve performance or security. The router’s firmware can be upgraded through the router interface. You access that by typing the router’s IP address into a web browser. Refer to your router’s user guide for further instructions.

Change the router’s broadcast channel

Other devices such as cell phones, cordless phones, microwaves or even house wiring can also interfere with the wireless signal. It’s for this reason that you have the ability to change the channel that the wireless router uses to broadcast its signal. Frequently, changing the channel on the router will bypass this interference. Again, you access this feature through the router’s web browser interface. And again, refer to your router’s user guide for this information.

Purchase a wireless range expander

If your wireless connection overall is good, but there are areas in the building where the signal strength is weak – and you can’t move the router to a better location – a wireless range expander may be the solution you need. A wireless range expander will receive the wireless signal from the router and re-broadcast it. The advantage is, the re-broadcast signal will be as strong as the signal going out from the router. So by installing a wireless range expander in an area that has “fair” or “poor” signal strength, you can improve the strength in that area to “excellent”.

Check your internet speed

Finally, you can check your internet speed before and after applying any of these fixes to actually determine if they work for you. There are several free speed tests on the internet. One of The Computer Psychic’s favorite can be found at www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
